Travel activities for primary age kids

We are planning a trip overseas, the longest flight time my children (8 yrs & 10 yrs) has ever travelled by plane. When searching through pinterest and google for travel activities, I find that most of the resources are targeted towards toddlers and younger kids.  My son is quite a mature 10 year old who has very limited interests (primarily beyblades and lego) and besides use of ipad, I struggle to find activities that would interest him.

Here's a list of items that I packed for our trip
  • Electronic devices & bluetooth headphones
  • Something tactile - stressball

  • Comfortable travel pillow
  • Magnetic games
  • Travel games - pack of cards, dice to play yatzhee
  • Laminated games & white board markers
  • Colouring book & pencils
  • Lots of snacks & lollies

Here are some useful activities & resources that I have found
  1. Dot to dot book
  2. Rubik's Cubes
  3. Magnetic board games - chess, othello
  4. Printable board games - laminated and used with white board markers

Girls cardigan

I found this beautiful pattern called "Snuggly bamboo cardi" published in the Creative Knitting magazine that is such a clever twist on multiple variations of p3 k1 stitches in different combinations. Love the different textures it created

Tennis Birthday Party

My son recently celebrated his birthday with a ‘Tennis Theme’. Growing up, I think the most elaborate part of my childhood birthday parties is the fancy birthday cakes & no parties. I know that it’s not intentional but I often feel the peer pressure to put on an Instagram worthy party, filled with elaborate party decorations and party bags – spending too much money as a result. I love the creativity of putting together a party but unfortunately am sorely lacking in baking skills. As a busy mum, I have chosen to put together and only focus on three ideas that I can make at home that are effective and displays the theme bunting.
Bunting
I found three different Tennis posters and quotes and printed them on A4 paper and taped them together as bunting.

Cake
I may be creative but I am a terrible baker! Birthday cakes are my biggest challenge so I was super grateful that my son only wanted a basic tennis court as his birthday cake.

Party Favours
I am not a fan of lolly bags as party favours. Most of the time, my children come home with party bags filled with lollies that they don’t enjoy eating and they end up being thrown away. Every time we host a birthday, I have tried to find party favours that the children would enjoy receiving. For this party, we gifted each child with a drink bottle labelled with motivational tennis quotes tags that I printed on thick card. To make the water bottle labels, I downloaded a tennis wallpaper image and added text in Microsoft Word.img_20190510_080932_3191926017603388366950.jpg

Hooded Vest

This little hoodie was such a joy to knit for a bubba who is due very soon. I had to modify it from the original pattern by lisaf design down to a size 0 (9mths)

Christmas Delight

If you’re like me, I often feel very unprepared when it comes to Christmas. Every year, I wished I had made time to make the Christmas ornament or decoration that I wanted to add but as usual, I run out of time because I started the project too late. Well this year I started earlier & made these gorgeous crochet fairy lights as a gift for my neighbour. It’s a free pattern from http://www.repeatcrafterme.com/2014/12/crochet-christmas-lights.html

Pom Pom Beanie

My kids recently learnt how to make pom poms at school. This led to a creative project from my daughter who requested for a 2 tone beannie with a pom pom on top (which she made for herself).

Messy Bun Beanie

I love winter because I love layers & accessories. I recently received a request to make a messy bun beanie. It has been such fun making them

Nerf Bullet Holster

My son has been invited to a nerf gun party so we’re in search of the best ways to store his bullets supplies.
I found an incomplete knitting project where I had a 3 inch piece of ribbing (k2 p2). So I decided to try to use it to create a cross body holster. crocheted and made the individual bullet slots.
